A Gearing Class Destroyer

From her Pacific Seabottom point of eternal rest Duncan echoes to her crew ---

"They called each other 'Captain,' 'Sir,' 'Executive Officer,' 'Departments,' and 'Crew,' but to me they were all my lovers --- The Duncaneers --- Who else but a people with such deep affection would have taken such tender care of me?"

This photo was taken by the PAO photographer from the USS Samuel Gompers AD 37, while standing on one of the destroyers at the Subic Bay Piers. I was stationed aboard the Gompers from 68-72, during a time when gun barrel replacement was the order of the day, and we replaced many. FYI, ships to port are USS Coontz DLG 9, USS Hopewell DD 681, USS Duncan DDR 874, and the USS Hubbard DD 748. It was an honor and a privilage to provide support services to this great group of veteran destroyers. Though many of these ships are now gone, our memories of them will always endure. Fair winds and following seas, John M. Evans
